  Last evening just as the chimes in the tower of the First Presbyterian Church had ceased their ringing of the familiar hymn "Lord, I'm Coming Home," M. K. Leard, of 1110 Park street, faithful member of the church passed away. Few men of the community were better or more favorably known. Irreproachable in reputation and untarnished of character he was recognized as one of the distinct assets of the city, the church and society. Those who knew him best appreciated him most. Mr. Leard was born in Indiana County, April 8, 1856, therefore he had reached the good age of three score and ten and five years. The home into which he was born was one of unusual culture and Christian devotion. As a lad he was early bereft of a mother's care, but a father of unusual abilities gave himself without reserve to the rearing of the son and two daughters, Miss Sarah and Miss Mary. The latter of these sisters preceded Mr. Leard but about two years ago in death. While it must be recorded that he was interested in a number of worthy occupations and was abundantly successful as a school-master, a farmer, a legislator and a business man, his first concern was for the church into which he was born and of which he was communing member for more than 60 years. His ability for leadership was early recognized. In the old Ebenezer Church he was made an Elder in 1882 and on his removal to Tarentum in 1910 he was elected to the Session of the First Church. He was a lover of song and for many years his splendid tenor voice led the service of praise in the church choir. Recognized as a successful farmer he was honored by election to the state legislature in 1899 and again in 1901. On coming to Tarentum he entered the lumber business forming the company of Leard and Hoffman. His wife preceded him in death, in 1916 and was laid to rest in Prospect cemetery where his remains will also repose. The home of Mr. Leard and two sisters on Park street was one of unusual beauty and happiness made so by the unvarying courtesy of each for the other. Funeral services will be held in the First Presbyterian Church to tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock. (obituary – Valley Daily News, Tarentum, PA)
