- Robert Dickinson, 90, of Brandon, SD, formerly of Mitchell, SD died Monday, December 18, 2017 at Bethany Home in Brandon, SD.
Funeral mass will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell with a visitation one hour prior. Burial will be at the American Legion Cemetery in Mitchell. Arrangements are under the direction of Bittner Funeral Chapel.
Robert J. Dickinson was born April 29, 1927 to Lawrence and Esther (Vittetoe) Dickinson in Mitchell, SD. He attended school in Mitchell, SD and graduated from Mitchell Senior High in 1945. He served in the US Airforce from 1945-1947. He later graduated from Refrigeration Trade School in Chicago, IL in 1948.
Robert worked at Bill Clarks Refrigeration and Radio Repair in Mitchell from 1948-1949, Bennett Appliance in Burlington, IA from 1950-1951, Iowa Ordinance Plant (Atomic Energy Commission) from 1952-1954, Grady Reed Refrigeration in Mitchell from 1955-1957, Tessier Sheet Metal in Mitchell from 1957-1976 where he served 19 years as an Air Conditioning Installation and Service Engineer, Mitchell Voc. Tech School from 1976-1989 as an Air Conditioning and Heating Instructor, and retired in 1989. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church Council for four years, American Legion, and Knights of Columbus. Robert has patents for fishing tackle in the US PAT office. He enjoyed 30 years of bow hunting deer, was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman, and enjoyed oil painting and golfing.
The couple married on January 12, 1949 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. After their marriage they lived for a short time in Mitchell, SD and then moved to Burlington, Iowa where they began their family. Their daughter Lynn was born on November 1, 1950 followed by daughter Joyce born on April 5, 1953. They moved back to Mitchell 2 months after their 2nd daughter was born where Robert (Bob) was employed by Tessiers Heating and Ventilation, Inc. They purchased a home on the south end of Mitchell at 219 Mitchell Blvd, where they were blessed with 3 more children, daughter Wendy born March 19, 1955, daughter Kim born September 19, 1956 and son, Joel Robert born on June 6, 1962. They lived in several homes in Mitchell during the time of raising their family, and upon their retirement they moved to a 2 bedroom apartment south of Holy Spirit Church. In 2007 they moved to Sioux Falls, SD to Good Samaritan Assisted Living, and then to Bethany Lutheran Nursing Home in Brandon, SD in 2013.
The couple is survived by four daughters and a son: Lynn (Bruce Huebner) Ethan, SD; Joyce (Chuck) Edwards, Sioux Falls, SD; Wendy (Sidney) Pederson, Sioux Falls, SD; Kim Dickinson, Brandon, SD, and Joel Dickinson, Omaha, NE. They are also survived by 12 grandchildren, and 16 greatgrandchildren.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane, parents, and four brothers and sisters.
