- ~~ Gardiner Leonard ~~
=====================================
Gardiner sailed from Londerderry, Ireland June 6, 1797 and arrive in New York August 16, 1797. He married Sarah Nuzum of Philadelphia June 6, 1799. They were married at Old Swedes Church on Swanson St. in Philadelphia. They came to Virginia to live Mary 7 or 22, 1802. This information came from a Bible shich states: This bible is the property of Dardiner Leonard bought in Philadelphia in the year of our Lord 1800. My book and heart shall never part. The Nuzum History states that Gardiner was a Pesbyterian and Sarah a Quaker. Sarah's parents were Richard Nuzum, Sen. and Althia Ather. She probably had a sister Sarah, and 3 brother: Thomas, William and George: who had a son named Caleb.
According to a Nuzum family legend: Sara was sick and asked Uncle Gardiner to read her will. He said, 'Sarah, thee did not leave me anything.' After I am gone thee will not need anything. I don't know how soon after that, he rode horseback to Nuzum Mill (now Hammond) the horse threw him and they both died the same day and are buried in the same grave in the Nuzum Cemetery near Fairmont. The headstone is very legible but I can't remember the dates on in. The Nuzum history gives 1851.
