  On June 06, 1888 he was married to Sallie Musselman in Coopersburg, PA by Rev. William Musselman. She died in 1888 and the funeral was held in the home with Rev. Jonas Schultz, a traveling evangelist, officiating. He was then married to Elizabeth Rittenhouse on June 06, 1889 in Norristown, PA by Rev. Abel Strawn. He entered the ministry of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ church (now Bible Fellowship) and served as vice-presiding elder and vice-president of the Foreign Mission Board. The Board accepted Elmer and his wife Elizabeth as missionaries to Armenia and on April 18, 1900, with their daughter, Laura Bertha (she went by her middle name), sailed to Antwerp, Belgium, went by train to Marseilles, France and again by ship and land travel to Hadjin, Turkey, where he became superintendent of a an orphanage there. The other daughters were left with Rev. Hallman and his family in Berlin (now called Kitchener), Ontario, Canada, who was a prominent member of the Canadian Conference of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ. Hallman had previously worked with Fidler in PA. The Fidlers later returned to Pa and in 1904 went to Berlin, Ontario, Canada, where he had accepted the pastorate of the Gormley Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church there and where Hallman had previously pastored. Fidler later served other churches in Ontario. Three more children were born to them in Canada.
