| Notes |
- Youngest son Of John Dietrich "Dieter" Stiely. Mother is Anna Maria (Nee Unknown) Stiely. Some have suggested Anna Maria's maiden name is either Hill or Reedy, but neither seem to be correct.
John likely had 4 wives, two of which are completely unknown. John's birth records at Hain's church use the surname Stiely as does his death record in the Reading Adler German newspaper, but most other records use Steely.
Wife 1 - unknown. Likely different than Anna Maria because when John marries her, children are born almost every year until her death in 1819.
Children:
1 - John Steely Jr; b circa 1804, d circa 1845 - possibly in a fire
Wife 2 - Anna Maria Mell; born 1786, died Novenmber 1819. Likely married circa 1809, but no proof.
Children:
2 - William Steely; b 1810, d 1883
3 - Polly Steely; b 1811, d ? as the wife of Charles Shell Sr
4 - Leysy Steely; b 1812, d ?
5 - Susannah Steely; b 1813, d ?
6 - Sarah "Katie" Steely; b 1814, d 1892 as wife of Peter Miller
7 - Anna Stiely; b 1816, d ?
8 - Benjamin Steely; b 1818, d 1872
Children 2 through 8 are baptized at Hain's church in Wernersville, Berks, Pennsylvania on 13 November 1819 - the very same day Anna Maria (Mell) Stiely, John's second wife, is buried at Hain's church.
By 1820 John has moved to Cocalico Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania where he appears to be married to another women per the 1820 and 1830 federal census. Only the two oldest boys, John Jr and Wlliam, accompany him in the move.
Wife 3 - unknown
Children:
9 - Samuel Steely; b 1821 to 1827 (likely 1827), d 1861. He is seen in the 1830, 1840, 1850, and 1860 Federal Census records. He is living with John Sr in 1830, 1840, & 1850.
Wife 4 - Catharine Nee unknown; b 1804, d ?
Children: none
Johannes "John" is seen in the Cocalico Township tax records in 1820 through 1834. He then appears to move back to Berks County and settles in Bern Township where he ultimately dies. The 4th wife is seen in the 1840 and 1850 federal census. She is known in the 1840 census only by her age range and her first name is seen in the 1850 census.
When Johannes moves to Cocalico Township he only takes the two oldest boys with him, namely John Jr and William. What happens to children 2 through 8 is a mystery. For some time it was believed the John Steely in the 1820 federal census and the John Staley in the 1830 census (the same person) was related to other Stehley/Staleys that inhabited Cocalico Township. This clan is descended from Ulrich Stehley who inhabited Lancaster County in the mid 1700s. This clan is almost never called Steely. However, the Cocalico tax records prove this John Steely is related to the Berks county Stiely clan. The proof comes from the emergence of William Steely as soon as he is eligible to be taxed in 1833. William is also seen in the 1820 federal census living in the household of John Steely Sr and so is John Jr seen there also. It appears that John Jr was living in 1810 with John Sr also.
Just a note on John Jr. He is only seen in Johannes' household in 1820 (but likely the unknown female child in the 1810 census of John Sr), a marriage record on July 11, 1830 in the Rayhers Church records in Cocalico Township, and in the 1840 federal census. It could be argued he is seen in the 1830 census for John Staley where he is wrongly listed as a female in the 16 to 19 age range. In the 1840 census John Jr is living only 7 families away from two cousins who are living next to each other. Those are Isaac Faust Steely, the son of Johannes' brother George, and another John Steely, the son of Johannes' brother Philip.
