He was a millwright. That he was skilled in this trade, and had also other business quailfications, is shown in the fact that October 25, 1714, he contracted with William Davies to bring from Vales all his (Nathan’s)“ kinsfolk and relatives as shall be free and willing to venture to come over on the said Nathan’s account ; he, Nathan, to pay all expenses from the time they left their homes, until their arrival in America.” ThatNathan Evans accumulated his wealth by his own efforts is attested byRev. Thomas Barton, who says in a letter written to the “Society forPropagating the Gospel in Foreign Parts,” that he had “acquired his estate by hard labor and industry.” In 1709 Nathan Evans was married to Susannah Davies, daughter ofWilliam Davies, of Radnor Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. In September, 1712, he purchased a plantation in Edgemont Township,Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and in 1719 an adjoining plantation. These he sold in 172-1, and May 1, 1725, he purchased from JosephCloud the plantation in Caernarvon Township, Lancaster County,Pennsylvania, on which he resided until his death in 1763. He was anactive member of Bangor Church, and assisted in the erection of thefirst building of that name in 1733. This was a log structure, and wassuperseded in 1761 by a more substantial Church, toward which NathanEvans gave 100 pounds and the ground upon which it was built. No better idea of this man can be had than that given on his tomb stone in Bangor Churchyard, the work of his friend and Pastor the Rev.Thomas Barton, and is as follows : “ Waiting for the glorious resurrection of the Faithful. Here lies the body of Nathan Evans the Elder.Born in Treve Englis in the county of Montgomeryin the Principality of Wales.A man humble in affluence and prosperity. In the duties of religion devout. In friendship faithful. In his dealings just. To the poor he disbursed with a liberal hand. To the Church he was a generous and bountiful benefactorAnd to all mankind a loving friend.Having attained the age of 81 years he calmly resigned his soul into thehands of the Redeemer on the 23rd day of December, 1763.The memory of the just shall be held in everlasting remembrance.” The children of Nathan and Susannah (Davies) Evans were : 1.
