Dr. James Stafford, born in Baltimore, Maryland September 25, 1811, settled in Pike township in 1852, and practiced in that region for many years. He died July 11, 1884.

JAMES STAFFORD, M. D., physician and druggist, Nichol Station; born Sept. 25, 1911, in Baltimore, Md; in 1820, went to Adams Co., Penn., thence to Petersburg, Va., in 1827;
while there commenced the study of medicine under Dr. John W. Moore; in 1832, went to Wheeling, from there to Springfield, Ohio, in 1833, and engaged in the boot and shoe business; in 1845, removed to Lewistown, Logan Co., and engaged in the practice of medicine; after two years, he went to Huntsville, in the same county; in the fall of 1852, he came to Muscatine Co.
and purchased a farm in this township, where he continued to practice medicine and farm, till in 1871, when he rented his farm, came into Nichols and engaged in the drug business in connection with his profession.
Married Miss Mary A. Roller, of Springfield, Ohio, July 31, 1834; she was born April 21, 1817, and died Jan. 17, 1846.
He again married, Mrs. Hannah Corwin, nee Dickenson, April 29, 1846; she was born Dec. 28, 1818, in Licking Co., Ohio; she had three children by former marriage--Martin, Rosella and Martha A.;
Mr. S. has four children by his first wife--Freeman, Amanda, Edward and Andrew J.; lost two--Anna and Sarah;
by second wife,
five living--Mary A., Caroline, Thomas James, and Julia; lost two--William and Samuel.
Edward and Martin served in the war in Co. G, 2d I. V. C. and Andrew J. in the 35th I. V. I. Democrat.

Dr. James and Mary(Rowland)Stafford, the former a native of Maryland and the latter of Pennsylvania. They were married in Ohio and remained there until the death of his wife, which occurred in 1845. There were six children in the family: Freeman, now living retired in California; Amanda, who married Thomas Johns, of West Liberty, Iowa, and died at the age of fifty-five years; Annie and Mary, both deceased; Edward J., our subject; and Andrew J., a carpenter of West Liberty, Iowa.
Shortly after the death of the mother of these children, Dr. Stafford was married to Hannah Dickinson, also a native of Ohio, and by this union six children were born, namely: Mary A., the wife of Thomas Roland, of What Cheer, Iowa, now living retired; Thomas Jefferson, a barber of Audubon county, Iowa; Julia, the widow of Bert Hibbs of Victor, Iowa; Kate, who married Edward Gilbert, a farmer of Bellefontaine, Ohio; James R., a carpenter of Thornburg, Iowa; and William R., who died in infancy.
After his second marriage Dr. Stafford devoted his attention to the practice of medicine in Ohio and later in Iowa after his arrival in this state. He passed away in 1872, his widow departing this life eighteen years later. He was a man of many fine qualities and as a physician was eminently successful.
