| 758 | Book of Biographies - Berks County "Horace D Bertolet was born in Oley Township, and during his childhood and early boyhood live in Fridensburg, Berks County. When yet a lad of probably sixteen or seventeen years he entered the employment of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad. Here his mechanical genius was so apparent that it attracted great attention and was a matter of surprise to his employers. He soon developed great skills, and was the best mechanic in the employ of the company an so considered by them. One of his inventions now in use by all of the railroads in the United States is a cylinder cock apparatus exhausting the water from the cylinder of locomotives, in place of the ordinary stop cock. He afterwards entered the draughting department of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, and many of the best machinists of the city today were students under him in mechanical drawing. He was a natural genius in mechanics and was widely known for his skill. His future looked most promising, and his friends predicted for him a brilliant career in that field, but most unfortunately their prediction was never fulfilled. His untimely death at the age of thirty four years cut off the life that had begun with such a promise of usefulness, and was the cause of universal sorrow to all those who knew and heard of him." | Bertolet, Horace De Turk (I26816)

| 762 | Born 1670 in Pembrokeshire, South Wales History of Bucks County, PA, Vol 3 by William H Davis - The James Family: The James family of Bucks county is of Welsh origin, being descended from John James and Elizabeth, his wife, who with sons Thomas, William, Josiah, and Isaac, migrated in the year 1711 from the parish of Riddillyn, Pembrokeshire, South Wales, and settled in Montgomery Township, Philadelphia, now Montgomery County. They were Welsh Baptists, and the vanguard of the little colony of that denomination who eight years later organized themselves into a church known as the Montgomery Baptist Church, of which the James family were members for many years. New Britain and Hilltown Baptist churches were offshoots of this ancient church. The James family contributed largely to the moral and financial support of the New Britain church for many generations. William James, son of the emigrant John James and Elizabeth his wife, from whom most of the family now residing in Bucks County are descended, was born in Pembrokeshire about 1692, and died in New Britain Township, Bucks County, in 1778. He seems to have been the favorite son, and was the largest landowner of the family. In the year 1725, his father and brother Thomas conveyed to him 206 acres of the 1,000 acre purchase and, in the same year, he purchased of his brother Josiah his allotment of 235 acres of the same. In 1738, he purchased of John Kirkbridge 2,207 acres of the society lands, part of which is still the property of his descendants. He also owned other tracts of land near Chalfont, which became the property of his sons-in-law. He conveyed practically all of his land to his children in his life time: in 1749 to John the 206 acres, and to Isaac the 207 acres, and in 1758 to Abel the 235 acres. William James married in 1718. The name of his wife was Mary, but nothing more is known of her. She was baptized at Montgomery church in 1719 as "Mary, wife of William James". She died about 1765. William and Mary James had five children: John; Isaac; Margaret, who married Henry LEWIS; Abel; and Rebecca, who married Simon BUTLER, JR. ''''''''''''''''''''''' WILL of: JAMES, William, New Britain, Bucks Co, PA WRITTEN: January 17, 1776 PROVED: August 6, 1778 Filed: August 26, 1778 "In the name of God Amen the Seventeenth Day of January in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred & Seventy Six, I, William James of the Township of New Britain in the County of Bucks and Province of Pennsylvania, yeoman being well stricken in years but of sound mind & memory........" | James, John (I25808)

| 766 | Born Caernarvon Townshop, Berks County, he served as as Ensign in the British during the French and Indian War, stationed at Fort Augusta in Northumberland Conty, a fortress that effectively held the Susquehanna Valley for the British colonist and limited French incursions deep into Pennsylvania. He later took part in the second expedition against Fort Duquense (in what is now Pittsburgh), and rose to the rank of Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion of Regulators, serving as an aide to the Battalions commander, Colonel Hugh Mercer. Becoming a resident of Philadelphia after the war, he became a successful merchant. He wholeheartedly threw his support in the cause of Indpendence at the start of the Revolutionary War, and on December 4, 1776 he was appointed by the Philadelphia Executive Council as Colonel and commander of the 1st Battalion of Associators of the City of Philadelphia and Northern Liberties, and later became Colonel of the 3rd Battalion, Philadelphia County Militia.. His command became part of General George Washington's Army, and he fought in the Battles of Princeton and Monmouth. At Princeton, he was with Hugh Mercer, now a General in the Continental Army, as he lay dying from the severe wounds he received in the engagement, and received General Mercer's sword in the last gesture of the General's life. In 1780 he was appointed as Superintendent of the Commissioners of Purchases for the Continental Army, and was the Wagon-Master for the State of Pennsylvania - two duties he performed until the end of the war. Returning to Philadelphia after Independence was won, he engaged in a sugar refinery business (one of the first in the country) with his son-in-law, Alexander Douglass. His father, Jacob Morgan Sr., was a prominent figure in Berks County, and in the Revolutionary War.
