- Joseph S. Horst was born in South Lebanon township, Lebanon County, in 1833, and died in 1897, aged sixty-four years. a son of Joseph and Barbara (Shenk) Horst, and he was reared and spent his life in South Annville township.
His education was obtained in the local schools during boyhood and later he studied at the at the Millersville Normal School and at a Business College in Baltimore. When his education was completed he engaged in teaching for several years and then spent one year operating a warehouse business. Later Mr. Horst accepted a clerical position in the mercantile establishment of John George, in the city of Lebanon, where he remained for several years and then took up farming on his father-in-law's farm, about 1861.

By inheritance he became the owner of this fine farm, comprising 280 acres, and he also owned two farms in North Cornwall township, one containing 140 acres, and the other, of 115 acres, being the farm which his son Harry B. now so successfully operates.
Mr. Horst was a very successful business man, a hard worker, keen and shrewd, a man of the highest business and personal integrity. He was one of the organizers of the Myerstown National Bank and a member of its board of directors from the beginning until his death, and was in addition, a stockholder in the Lebanon banks. Mr. Horst was also public-spirited and ready to assist all enterprises approved by his very superior business judgment. For many years he was an active member of the U. B. Church and a most liberal supporter.
His family consisted of four children, namely: Abraham, a farmer of North Cornwall township ; Harry B. : Frank, a farmer on the old homestead near Schaefferstown ; and Uriah, who also resides on the same old farm.
Joseph S. Horst, aged about 64 years, a highly esteemed citizen residing about 1½ miles west of this city, in Cornwall township, died this morning at 9:15 o'clock from heart failure with which he had been troubled a number of years. The deceased up to six years ago resided on his farm near Schaefferstown, when it was built a beautiful home.
He is survived by a widow, whose maiden name was Mary Bruebaker (sic), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Bruebaker (sic), of Schaefferstown; four sons, Uriah and Frank; farmers of Heidelberg Township and Abraham and Harry, farmers of Cornwall Township. There also survive the following brothers and sisters; Samuel S. Horst, of North Eighth Street; Mrs. Frank Krum of South Fourth Street, this city; Mrs. Joseph Light and Mrs. William Krick of Avon; Mrs. Kate Clark of Deadwood, Dakota, and Mrs. Barbara Jones of Plattsmouth, Nebraska.
The deceased will be sorely missed by the business community of this county as he was always liberal with his means and business qualities to aid in establishing enterprises. At the time of his death he was the president of the Keystone Match and Machine Company of this city and a director of the Myerstown bank and other institutions. [Lebanon Daily News]
9 Aug 1897: The funeral of Joseph S. Horst will be held on Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock at the house, in Cornwall Township. Persons coming to Lebanon over the C & L and Reading Railroads can take a special trolley which will leave the courthouse at 8:30 o'clock. After services at the house the funeral will proceed to the old homestead, about one mile north of Schaefferstown, occupied by Uriah Horst, where services will also be held for the benefit of relatives and friends residing in that vicinity and in Lancaster County. Interment will be made at the family burial ground on the farm. Deceased years ago resided in Lebanon during which time he became a member of Salem U. B. Church. He led a faithful Christian life up to the time of his death and during his sufferings was upheld by his religious faith and he looked forward to the time when he would enter into that rest which is reserved for those who love God.
