- Robert M. Grimes, 90, formerly of Robesonia, passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2016, at his Phoebe Berks Village apartment in Wernersville.
On November 13, 1948, he married Thelma M. (Wenrich) Grimes, who survives. Born in Stouchsburg on January 23, 1926, a son of the late Minnie R. (Manbeck) and Walter H. Grimes.
He was a 1943 graduate of Womelsdorf High School and was a Pilot in the U.S. Air Force from August 1943 to February 1946. He attended Mississippi State University; a U.S. Army graduate for pilot single engine; a Penn State University graduate for Flight Instructor and multi engine training and ratings; and classes for appliance sales, service and air conditioner service.
Bob was a Flight Instructor at Grimes Airport, Bethel Twp., from March 1946 until 1988 and was the President of Walter H. Grimes Appliances in Womelsdorf from 1970 to 1991.
He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Womelsdorf, where he served on consistory, was a 57-year member of Rotary Club, a member of several local fire companies and a member of the Paul Harris Foundation. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels for 17 years and Rotary breakfast fundraising for 20 years with donations contributed to local schools and civic organizations. Flying was his passion and also enjoyed playing tennis.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are many nieces and nephews.
He was also predeceased by two brothers, John and William Grimes; and four sisters: Mildred Grimes, Helen Wilhelm, Irene Hassler and Margaret Beshore.
Services will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. at Phoebe Berks Village Chapel, Wernersville, with Rev. Leonard Knighton officiating. Friends are invited to call on Saturday from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at Phoebe Berks Village Chapel. Interment will follow at Hamlin Cemetery, Bethel Twp., Lebanon County. Lamm & Witman Funeral Home, Inc., Wernersville, is handling arrangements.
