JOHN A. BRITTON DIES ON SUNDAY
Second Member of Firm of C. K. Whitner & Co. to Pass Away in Short Time
John A. Britton, another of Reading's substantial and well- known business men, passed away at the Reading hospital Sunday morning at 8.30 o'clock as the result of a complication of diseases. He . was 67 years of age and was born in this city, his parents being John A. and Leah (Borkert) Britton.
Following a public school education he started his business career as an errand boy for Lewis Briner at 3rd and Penn streets, with whom he remained four years and then entered the employ of John D. Mishler, who was proprietor of Reading's first Globe Store. It was while there that he mastered all the details of merchandising and then became associated with Dives, Pomeroy & Stewart and at the time this firm occupied the present quarters of C. K. Whitner & Co.
After a service with the firm he engaged in the mercantile business with John E. Lewis at Lebanon, but later disposed of his interest and returned to this city, becoming a salesman for C. K. Whitner. By close application, dint of service, and sincerity of purpose, Mr. Britton rose step by step until 1898 when he was admitted to the firm.
Deceased had been bedfast since June 1. He is survived by his wife, Ida; a sister, Mary, a brother, Andrew, and the following children: Calvin, Harry A,, Ruth, wife of Walter Ullshoefer, and a stepson, Arthur Kline, all residing in this city.
By a singular coincidence he went to bed the day C. K. Whitner was buried and it is thought his senior partner's demise was in a great measure responsible for his illness, since both had a deep attachment for each other.
Mr. Britton was a member of several fraternal and business organisations and of the St. Paul's Reformed church, of which he was a faithful worker. He enjoyed the confidence not only of the firm of which he was a member, and its employees, but of a large number of friends and acquaintances throughout the city and county.
