- Heidi Fry Edelman died of complications from lung cancer on August 29, 2016 in Cleveland, Ohio. She was 74 years old. Private graveside services were held at Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Upper Montclair, N.J. under the direction of Shook's Cedar Grove Funeral Home, 486 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove, N.J., shookscedargrove.com.
Heidi was the oldest child and daughter of the late G.T.C. Tom Fry, advertising executive, and Louise Cronin Fry, operating-room nurse, of Montclair, N.J., New York City, and Point O' Woods, N.Y. She attended the Kimberley School (now the Montclair Kimberley Academy) in Montclair, N.J. before transferring to boarding school at the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. A highly-talented portrait painter, Heidi studied at the Villa Mercedes in Florence, Italy and later at the New York Studio School in Greenwich Village, New York.
Her first career was as a successful commercial artist in publishing and fashion illustration in Manhattan, but living in Montclair and Cedar Grove, N.J. Thereupon, Heidi became a professional chef, working in several well-known Manhattan restaurants and gourmet-food stores during a long career, and meeting her husband of many years, Leslie David Edelman, also a chef, after the dissolution of her first marriage from Clinton Harriman, a Captain in the Military Sealift Command during the Vietnam War.
Heidi and David had just retired to the suburbs of Cleveland to be near her sister''s family when she fell ill.
Heidi was a bright, creative, gregarious and gentle spirit, and will be greatly missed. She is survived by her husband David, her sister, Holly McGowan (Tom) of Bay Village, Ohio, her brother, Morton Tim Fry (Pat) of New York City, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, a gift to the ASPCA would be appreciated by the family.
