  Patricia Joan “Pat” Shaffner, 74, of West Burlington, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2017, in West Burlington. Born Jan. 16, 1943, in Mount Pleasant, she was the daughter of Melvin Cornelius and Marye Eleanor Montgomery Smith. On Feb. 3, 1960, she married John Fredrick Shaffner in Salem, Iowa. Mrs. Shaffner worked in production at Champion Spark Plug. Following her retirement in 1992, she began a second career in retail sales, working for Montgomery Ward, Fashion Bug, and Christopher & Banks until the time of her death. She attended school in Salem and graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant in 1961. She was a member of West Avenue Baptist Church and Salem Congregational Church. She actively participated in the Red-Hot Flashes of the Red Hat Society and Menopause Mommas, originally a group of five close friends. Known to her family as a shopper extraordinaire, she loved finding a bargain. She collected Hot Wheels and gnomes. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
