- Gene M. Crawford, 94, died at 4:15 p.m. Jan. 21, 2012, at Roselawn Manor Nursing Home, Spencerville.
He was born May 30, 1917, in Arcadia to Thomas H. and Lydia M. Orth Crawford, who preceded him in death. On May 25, 1940, he married Doris E. Turner, who died May 30, 1989. On April 11, 1991, he married Martha Good Matthews, who died Feb. 9, 1994.
Mr. Crawford was a 1935 graduate of Arcadia High School. He attended Findlay College, where he received his bachelor of arts degree. He attended Ashland College and graduate school at the University of Michigan, School of Public Health. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the European theater with the 480th Medical Ambulance Company attached to the Army Division. His unit evacuated more than 26,000 wounded and ill soldiers, for which it received a Presidential Unit Citation award. He served in four major battle campaigns. He taught and coached at Rawson High School. He served 25 years in public health, retiring as health administrator for Lima-Allen County, and later as executive director for the West-Central Ohio Health Systems Agency. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church since 1960. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1275 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 370.
Survivors include a daughter, Susan (William) Kimmel, of Lima; a son, Joel (Diana) Crawford, of Linden, Mich.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Marion L. Crawford, of Frankton, Ind.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne R. Crawford; and a sister, Helen Good.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Shawnee Chapel. The Rev. Kent Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in Arcadia Cemetery, with military rites.
