Born in Baltimore on Monday, May 25, 1931 at Baltimore Maryland’s Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Walter was named after his mother’s Uncle Walter Rigg of Reading, Pennsylvania, an industrial giant of his time. He lived on Forest Drive in Catonsville until his father and mother, Donald and Dorothy “Riggie” Mohler moved to their family home at 301 Montrose Avenue in Catonsville n 1937. Walter’s mother would live in that home until her death at the age of 104 in 2009. In 1944 Walter was one of many American children stricken with Polio, a disease from which he had mild residual effects throughout his life. Walter graduated from St Mark’s School in Catonsville, Mount St. Joseph High School in 1949, receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Loyola College in 1953.
Shortly after college, Walter’s first job was with Charles A Skirven Realty, pursuing his father’s love of real estate before moving on to a position as a sales representative for Standard Lime and Cement which eventually became Martin Marietta Cement. Mr. Mohler rose to the position of Vice President of Sales for Martin Marietta.
While working for Standard Lime and Cement, Walter Mohler met Sally Mitchell and they were married in 1958 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Towson Maryland. Together they shared their early years of marriage in Charlottesville, Virginia, Howard County, Maryland, Richmond, Virginia, finally returning to the Baltimore area to reside in Lutherville-Timonium in 1972. Mr. Mohler became active in a number of church and community activities. He served on the Financial Team at St Joseph’s Parish as well as a Eucharistic Minister for the parish. He was also an active member of the Maryland Traffic Club.
In 1981, following his career with Martin Marietta, Mr. Mohler worked for T.H. Compton in West Virginia. While at Compton, Walter Rigg maintained his residence in Springlake so that his children could remain in their schools and community, surrounded by family and friends. Despite a career that took Walter from state to state, he never forgot his roots and was always a fixture at the Catonsville 4th of July Parade. “The 4th of July and family events were like another religion to my dad,” said Rigg Mohler, Walter’s son. “His standard spot will always be reserved at the corner of Frederick Road and Montrose Avenue when the parade rolls by.”
Mr. Mohler’s passions included bridge, monthly poker games with childhood friends and golf as a member of the Towson Golf and Country Club in Phoenix, MD. He loved to travel visiting Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, and Russia as well as many countries in Europe.
Walter Rigg and Sally Mitchell were married for 46 years until she passed away from cancer in October 2004. Walter found love again with Elaine Burns and they were married on January 20, 2007, enjoying six wonderful years together. Once again Walter pursued his passion for travel as he and Elaine visited with family and friends across the United States as well as exploring Mexico. Walter’s children often remarked that Elaine brought the light back into their father’s eyes.
