  George was the son of the widow Elinore Carter Pownall and her recently deceased husband, George Pownall. He was raised by a step-father, Joseph Hoopes. The family migrated from Lostock Gralam, Cheshire, England to Solebury, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania on the ship 'Friends Adventure' on Sep. 28, 1682 (28th day of 7th month, 1682). George (Sr.) died when a tree fell on him shortly after arrival. The arrival date used above is from the Gregorian calendar. Quaker religious records from the period used the Julian calendar, which began the year in March. George (Jr.) married Hannah Hutchinson in 1707 at the Monthly Meeting at Fallsington, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania. They had four children: John in 1708, Rachel in 1714, Reuben in 1719 and Simeon in 1721. George (Jr.) was a yeoman. He signed his will on May 13, 1748 and it was probated on Oct. 18, 1748.
