  Richard James killed in action-Richard Edward James was born in Mansfield on Jan. 21, 1921, to Hubert and Marguerite James. He went to Mansfield Senior High School. He met Arlene Bauman in the ninth grade and they dated all through high school, marrying May 26, 1939, in Greenup, Kentucky. James went into the Army Air Corps on Sept. 8, 1943. He trained at several bases, the last three months in Colorado Springs, before he was sent to Italy on July 1, 1944. A tail gunner on a B-24, his plane was hit while on a mission over Munich, Germany. They crashed in an olive grove near Foggia, Italy. Dick was killed that day-July 19, 1944. He is buried in the military cemetery at Nettuno, Italy. He had one daughter, Sharon Ann, born on Dick's birthday, Jan.21, 1945. His wife, has since remarried and his daughter went to Italy in April 1970 to visit the military cemetery to see the gravesite of Sgt. Richard James. He was survived by his wife, Arlene James Minich and his sister, Dorothy James Sawyer. His daughter, Sharon Ann, died Aug. 8, 1990. She had three children.
