- I read today a brief handwritten genealogy note in Box 2, Folder 13, Item __, that Karl Gest b. 1872 was shot to death in 1907 in Beach, North Dakota, USA. Source: Todd Gest Coll Backlog, Cinti Mus Cntr Lib & Archives, Cinti OH. But it fortuitously seems that this veteran survived the shooting and instead died c1927, as per some decades later research in those multigenerational Gest family files.
In my May 2010 old email, I notice that I was kindly advised by Bill Myers that one Karl Gest's birthday was 25 July 1871.
This Karl Gest is a son of Susannah Bailey Gest and her husband. [Todd Gest Coll Backlog, Box 1, Folder 6, Item 6, Jul 1880 Deed, Campbell Co KY, Clarissa Gest to Jos Henry Gest et al, "To admit as CoTrustees as they become of age Clifford H Gest, Guy M Gest and Karl Gest, children of said Susannah Gest."]
Box 3, folder __, the same Todd Gest Coll Backlog, has transcribed letters from one Karl Gest, a soldier in Cuba-1899-- these seem to be from this same Karl Gest. Box 9, folder 14, research notes also may include further details.
Clues:
1. Try perhaps newspaper pub. October 27, 1907, The Bismarck Tribune from Bismarck, North Dakota · Page 4 [an image I cannot view] and do advise...The OCR text which is usually scrambled hints at the saga: "He first met Karl Gest, whom he knocked down and beat over the head with a gun. Winding up by making him swim across the river and shooting him through the leg while he was doing it. Mr. Gest was taken to the Dickinson hospital in a very serious condition... Gillaland then went back to the saloon ...[sic/errors here/caution-need actual content]
2. fold3, shows Karl Gest as a Corporal, Spanish Amer War Service Record Index. fold3 also shows passport papers for Karl and his mother, Susannah Gest, which include Karl's DOB as named here.
3. Gest Families of Chester Co PA and Ohio [chart cOct 2006, revised 2007 by Michael VW Wolfe] mentions Laura Kelker, born 1880 Ill as wife of this Karl Gest.
