- John William Batson, Jr., 97, of Wrightsville Beach, NC, died Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at Emeritus at Oviedo Assisted Living and Care Community in Oviedo, Florida. He was born February 5, 1915, in Wilmington, NC, to the late John William and Christian Mae Batson.
Johnny grew up and, except for the war years, spent his entire life on Wrightsville Beach. He was a graduate of New Hanover High School and co-owned B&M Exxon on Harbor Island until his retirement. He was a member of the Wrightsville Beach Volunteer Fire Department Relief Board for twenty-one years, a sixty-two-year member of the Wrightsville Beach Lions Club, and an active member of Wrightsville United Methodist Church.
During World War II, Johnny, a staff sergeant in the Army Air Force, served as a radioman on a B-17 bomber. Attached to the 460th Fighter Squadron, he saw active duty in the Asiatic Pacific, participating in Air Offensive Japan. He ended his tour of duty at Ie Shima Air Field, Ryukyu Islands, Japan. Johnny also served one year during the Korean War.
Johnny was preceded in death by his wife of forty-one years, Betsy, in 1993; his son Richard in 2009; and his companion of twelve years, Betty King, in 2011. He is survived by four children: John Sutton of Wilmington, NC; Susan Grier of Frisco, TX; John Batson III of Hampstead, NC; Terry Batson of Clayton, NC; eighteen grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service officiated by Pastor P.D. Midgett, Wrightsville United Methodist Church, will be held at 11am on Friday, June 15, 2012, Oleander Memorial Gardens, Wilmington, NC.
