- Alice Ann Chandler Graham, 86, of Georgetown, Texas, passed into eternal life on August 28, 2017.
She was born on January 17, 1931 in Abilene, Texas to Emmette and Marguerite (Wylie) Chandler.
She attended Abilene High School and Christian College in Columbia, Missouri, where she received a degree in English.
Alice married U.S. Army Captain Charles P. Graham in 1954 and moved to Fontainebleau, France where her new husband was stationed at Headquarters, Allied Forces Central Europe. This was the beginning of 31 years as an Army wife, during which she made Army quarters across the United States and Europe into warm homes for her husband and their three children. She loved to welcome people into their homes and hosted frequent dinner parties and gatherings for Army friends and co-workers.
This love of entertaining continued into retirement years and later when they moved to Sun City Texas in Georgetown.
Alice believed in the importance of supporting her community through volunteering. While her husband was on active duty, she volunteered with the American Red Cross and served at Arlington National Cemetery as an Arlington Lady. She was involved in her children’s schools, the civilian churches and military chapels they attended, and Officers’ Wives Club activities. After moving to Georgetown, Alice volunteered at the Caring Place, Children’s Advocacy Center, Medico humanitarian service organization and First Presbyterian Church in Georgetown, and served on a local board of Habitat for Humanity. In later years, she created Caring Ministry Calls and made regular phone calls to people who were ill or homebound.
One of the joys of Alice’s life was being a Sunday School teacher alongside special friends at First Presbyterian Church in Georgetown. She loved to tell the first and second-graders stories from scripture and praised them as they recited their “Memory Goals.” The children came by to visit Mrs. Graham long after they graduated from her class, just to give her a hug and to check the mark on the wall that showed how tall they were when they were in the class.
Alice was part of a weekly Bible study group in Georgetown and the ladies of that group became among her closest friends. She was talented in needlework, making exquisite needlepoint rugs and seasonal pillows that decorated their homes. Alice and Chuck traveled extensively during retirement and enjoyed riverboat cruises throughout the world.
She is survived by Charles (Chuck) Graham, her loving husband of 62 years; daughter, Susan Graham Whiteside, and her husband, Weldon Whiteside, of Austin; two sons, Edwin Graham and Richard Graham, and his wife, Melanie Musick-Graham, all of Atlanta; granddaughters, Megan Ann Whiteside Ely, and her husband, Jason Ely, of Hanford, California; Kelsey Whiteside Haley, and her husband, Stratton Haley, of Fort Worth; Kaytlin Graham and Hannah Graham, both of Atlanta.
Alice’s warm smile, ready wit, red-headed feistiness and caring heart will be missed by many people of all ages.
A private interment will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, on Friday, September 8, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. .
A memorial service at First Presbyterian Church, Georgetown, will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. .
In lieu of flowers, you may honor Alice and her love for children with a memorial gift to be used for children’s education at First Presbyterian Church, 703 S. Church Street, Georgetown, Texas 78626.
A special thanks to Brandy and Jessica at Hospice Austin, Sarah Adams, and Dr. Christopher Hearne and his staff for the care they provided for Alice.
