- IOWA CITY, Iowa — Vera Jean Gumtow, 84, of Iowa City, formerly of Lone Tree, died Sunday, January 18, 2009, at Windmill Manor in Coralville.
Funeral Service will be 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 22, 2009, at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree. An Honorary casket bearer will be Jack Larew. Casketbearers will be Tony Casella, Mike Casella, C.J. Jenks, Sean Casey, Daniel Casey, and Andy Garcia. Burial will be at the Lone Tree Cemetery. Following the interment a time of food and fellowship will be held at the Lone Tree American Legion.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the Safe Haven Animal Shelter in Williamsburg, in memory of Jean.
Vera was born on February 23, 1924, in Lone Tree, the daughter of John Larew and Ethel Stonebarger. She married Robert Harvey Gumtow in May of 1972, in Chicago.
She was employed at Marshal Fields in Chicago in the personnel department. She was a past member of the Lone Tree Methodist Church. She loved pets, especially dogs. Most of all she loved her family.
She will be deeply missed by her husband, Robert of Iowa City; two daughters, Carole Casey Galvin of Chicago, Illinois, and Tina Casella of Tiffin; two step-sons, Bob Gumtow and wife, Rosanna, of Rockford, Illinois, and Mike Gumtow and wife, Connie, of Michigan; six grandchildren, Kelly Garcia, Kimberly Henao, Sean Casey, Daniel Casey, Mike Casella and Tony Casella; two great-grandchildren, Jeremy, and Jenae; a brother, Jack Larew and wife, Norma, of Lone Tree; and a sister-in-law, Hester Larew of Lone Tree and her nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Jim Larew.
