Lone Tree Reporter, Thursday, December 26, 1940:
Funeral services were held at the Giles Funeral Home in Burlington Monday at 1 p. m. for J B Smith, a former resident of Lone Tree. The body was then brought here where short services were held at the grave with Rev. E. A. Voss in charge. Mr. Smith passed away Thursday following an emergency operation at a Burlington hospital Wednesday.
Jesse Burge Smith was the son of Wilson R. and Louisa Burge Smith, born at Iowa City, Iowa, Dec. 13, 1883 and passed away Dec. 19, 1940, aged 57 years and 6 days. When a small boy the family moved to Lone Tree where he received his education in the Lone Tree schools. On July 20, 1904 he was united in marriage to Miss Faye Stonebarger, the Rev. M. S. Rice, Iowa City, officiating.
They started housekeeping in Lone Tree, later moved to Burlington where Mr. Smith was a switchman on the C. B. & Q. railroad for a number of years, giving up the work several years ago. He has since worked at painting and interior decorating. Surviving are his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Leonard Tyler, Oceanside, Calif., and Mrs. D. C. Lewis, of Burlington; two grandchildren, Robert Tyler and Dallis Lewis; two sisters, Mrs. Edward Dreher of Burlington and Mrs. Fred Burger of Woonsocket, S. Dak.; and one half-brother, Leland Smith of Iowa City. Two daughters, Reva and Pearl, preceded him in death.
