In his twenty-fourth year, he and his brother Andrew bought a farm on which he resided for seven years. When his father was dying, he returned home and helped his mother for three years. When she died, he bought the farm on which he had been brought up. On May 25, 1854, he married Rebecca Sheep whose father was Andrew Sheep. They had no children but adopted Theresa, daughter of William Dildine of Columbia County. Theresa married Eli Appleman; after that time they lived on Nathaniel's farm. Nathaniel served as administrator of six estates. He held all the important offices in his township. He was once elected justice of the peace, but refused to accept. He was a lieutenant in the old state militia for nine years.
