Following from obituary of daughter Catharine Green, about her father David.
Born in Reading on north side of Penn Square, between 5th and 6th. His father Michael was born near Schaefferstown, Lebanon County(then Lancaster), 1732; and his grandfather Michael Bright, the elder, emigrated from the Palatinate, Germany, in 1726, arriving here at the age of 20 and settling near Schaefferstown.
At that time there were but three counties in the Province of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Bucks and Chester. Schaefferstown was in Chester county when the elder Michael Bright(then written as Brecht) arrived, and was one of the oldest towns in the state. In 1729 Lancaster was established, and Schaefferstown was included with that county and later became Lebanon county.
Michael the second, was one of the earliest citizens of Reading and his son David(this memorial) became one the most honored citizens of Berks county. He held the office of County Treasurer and also county commissioner, and director of the poor. He was instrumental in purchasing land to establish a poor house for Berks. He also built the Almshouse buildings and was one of the principal managers of that operation.
David Bright was engaged in farming in Reading for many years, and owned a farm of some 75 acres, which all became part of the corporate limits of Reading.
Of his ten children, all grew to adulthood and became useful members of society. David's oldest son , Michael, left for the southwest around 1820. He was also reported to have visited family in Tennessee and soon after all trace of him was lost. He was born about 1796, Abigail m. George Fisler; William m. Sarah Lorah; Catharine m.. John Green; Peter m. Mary Evans; John m. Catharine Nahrer; David the eighth child and fifth son, died 1836 at Zanesville, Ohio;Aaron m1. Maria S Miller, m2 Rosanna Swoyer; Francis unmarried.
