- Robert Ira Buckwalter, Sr., 87, of Franconia Twp., passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2020 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of 50 years to the late Jean (Stevenson) Buckwalter who died in 2010.
Born in Glenside, PA, he was a son of the late Ira and Erma (Fox) Buckwalter.
A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, he served with the 8th Army as a cryptographer. He was stationed in Seoul, Korea from 1953 to January, 1955, attaining the rank of Sergeant, and played on the U.S. Armed Forces Baseball Team.
Mr. Buckwalter mostly worked in the sales and accounting fields. He attended Temple University and Delaware Valley College, where he majored in Business Administration. He retired in 1994, after 22 years with Asplundh Tree Expert Co. in Willow Grove as Vice President and Division Manager. He started the one-call system while there, and was also a softball coach.
He served as a volunteer for many organizations including the Red Cross Disaster Program, the Head Start Program, Grand View Hospital, and as an Omsbudsman for Upper Moreland Twp. He also served as a committeeman for the Republican Party, and on the NJ Board of Public Utilities. In his free time, he enjoyed playing saxophone in the Ferko Mummer’s String Band, playing golf, and being with his family. In his earlier years, he was very active in sports in the Glenside area, and later coached Little League Baseball in the Ardsley and Upper Moreland Leagues.
He is survived by his daughter, Lynann Guzman and her husband Salvatore of Telford, his son, Robert I. Buckwalter, Jr. and his wife Kathleen of Telford, four grandchildren: Steven (Monica), Shannon, Colleen, Gabrielle, three great grandchildren: Isaiah, Lorenzo, Isabella, and a brother, William Buckwalter and his wife Sherri of Kutztown. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Buckwalter.
Family will receive friends from 10-11 AM on Friday, February 7, 2020, in the Sadler-Suess Funeral Home, 33 N. Main St., Telford, PA 18969. A Memorial Service will follow at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family in St. John Neumann Cemetery in Chalfont.
