- The Rev. Ronald Norman Hiester, 82, died on Sunday, January 21, 2018.
Father Hiester was born on April 20, 1935, in Reading, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Wellington and Mary S. (Hiester) Shade. He was a graduate of Oley High School in Oley, PA, in 1954, Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA, in 1958 and Moravian Theological Seminary in Bethlehem, PA, in 1962. He first served at First Moravian Church in Uhrichsville, OH, and was then received into the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of West Virginia in 1964. Churches he served thereafter include Grace Church, Elkins, WV; Saint Mary Magdalen, Wheaton, MD; St. Peter’s, Poolesville, MD; St. Mark’s Perryville, MD; Emmanuel, Oak Hall, VA; St. George’s, Cordova, AK; St. Peter’s, Seward, AK; St. Timothy’s, Greenville, NC; Trinity, Scotland Neck, NC; St. John’s Church, Florence, SC; All Saints, Florence, SC; and The Church of the Ascension, Hagood, SC.
Retiring in Florence, Father Hiester was active in The Golden Kiwanis Club, where he was a member and past president. He was a scholar of the Old Testament, especially the Dead Sea Scrolls and of history in general. He was also an avid model railroader, particularly fond of the Atlantic Coastline Railroad, and was a member of several model railroading clubs.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Joyce Fenstermaker, and his brother Richard Kenneth Hiester.
