"Maxwell Cunningham Byers was a brilliant and hard - nosed railroad administrator. Rising through the railroading ranks as a civil engineer he was described as engaging, who followed no fads and “...a capacity for work that was astounding.” He was practical, a student of railroad operations, and a problem solver whose solutions were sound and economically realistic. His short career culminated in his appointment as President of the Western Maryland Railway in 1920 [the youngest railroad president in the country]. Byers political and business skills helped the Western Maryland reach record profits and would be severely tested during the Great Depression. Baltimore's B&O Railroad Museum exhibit, Maxwell Cunningham Byers: A Distinguished Life and A Tragic Death(beginning June 2014), explores his life and death.” [He was shot in his office by an older, disgruntled vice president who then shot himself.]
A couple weeks later the board of directors' voted for a substantial pension to be used in the education of Mr. Byers' five sons. (Time 20 Oct 1930)
