• Notes

  My Grandfather Charles William Body was born on January 27, 1918 on our farm just outside of Bement, Illinois, the youngest son of Shirley Darlington "S.D." Body and Margaret Alice Body (nee Bower). I never knew my Great Grandfather S.D., he died of a heart attack when my Mother was in high school. In the mid 1970's our farm was designated by the State of Illinois as a Centennial Farm, meaning that the farm had been owned and worked by the same family for at least 100 years. The Bement Register put a picture of Grandpa Charlie in the paper standing next to the Centennial Farm sign that the State posted at the end of our driveway. He was wearing as typical of my Gramps, overalls, a white tee-shirt and I am almost certain a seed corn hat. He looked so young and proud, though slightly uncomfortable to be the center of so much attention. My Grandpa lived a life that so few can even remember in this day and age, the idyllic, hard working life of a farmer. While my Grandpa did graduate from Bement High School his whole life, dawn to dark, day in and day out was his farm, his wife, his children and grandchildren and great grandchildren. He simply would not have wanted it any other way. He along with my Grandma Mary Allene Body (nee Kirk) raised four children on this farm, one child Carol Ann, the youngest died when she was 3 years old. The three surviving children of Charles and Allene were Margaret Ellen Body (my mother Peggy or Peg), Charles William Body Jr. (affectionately known as Charlie Bill) and Mary Katherine Body. At this writing my Mother is the only surviving child, Charlie Bill and Mary Katherine succumbing in 1983 and 1990 respectively to the same disease that took our Grandma Allene. My Grandpa Charlie re-married in the early 1980s to a most wonderful woman Joanne Kalembach, and it is my firm belief that she gave new life and love to my Gramps and that because of her we were able to enjoy my Grandfather, his wit, his knowledge and all the rest for many more years.
