- The son of Michael & Hannah (Nees) White, in 1860 he was a painter living in Manheim, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lancaster August 7, 1862, and mustered into federal service there August 11 as a private with Co. E, 135th Pennsylvania Infantry. While stationed at Georgetown, Washington DC, he and some friends got into rough-housing that ended with an accidental but very forceful kick to George's crotch. He was admitted to Trinity U.S. Hospital, Washington DC, February 14, 1863, transferred to the convalescent camp at Alexandria, Virginia. He returned to the regiment on April 21, 1863, and honorably discharged with his company May 24, 1863. He also enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 3, 1864, as 2nd lieutenant of Co. H, 205th Pennsylvania Infantry. Twice treated for fevers and again for a fall during the final assault on the Confederate works at Petersburg, Virginia, on April 2, 1865, he was nonetheless promoted to 1st lieutenant May 11, 1865, and honorably discharged with his company June 2, 1865, at Alexandria, Virginia.
He married Mary Ann Bear January 23, 1866, in Lancaster and fathered Nathan Bear (b. 02/08/69), John (b. ?), and Mary Ann (b. ?). By 1890, he was living in Atchison County, Kansas, but moved to Mabelvale, Pulaski County, Arkansas, where he died. His pension reports April 20 as his day of death.
