- James E. "Yogi" Bear, 82, of Manor Township, passed away on Friday, December 23, 2016 at Hospice & Community Care, Mount Joy. He was the loving husband of Evelyn L. (Leachey) Bear, with whom he was married to for sixty-two years.
Born January 19, 1934, in Lancaster, he was the thirteenth child of the late Harry D. Connor Sr., and Sally M. (Shirk) Connor. Yogi was the adopted son of the late Col. Fred S. and Etta M. (Frankhouser) Bear. He was a member of First Reformed United Church of Christ, downtown Lancaster for forty-eight years.
Yogi was a 1952 graduate of J. P. McCaskey High School and attended Penn State. A proud Veteran, he served for 20 years and discharged as a First Sargent E8 with the Fleet Marine Force Atlantic in Force Recon, and a short tour on the U.S.S. Sea Lion ASSP-315. He graduated from military Radio School and the U.S. Naval Disciplinary Barracks, and twice was awarded Marksman Awards firing 248/250 and 249/250. He was a "HAM" radio operator, WB3FQY, Extra Class, and an FCC accredited examiner. Additionally, Yogi retired from the Kellogg Company-Lancaster Plant after twenty years of service with the company. He was one of the first fifteen people that were hired for the Lancaster Plant, having worked in Logistics for rail & truck traffic and inventory.
In addition to his wife, Evelyn; Yogi is also survived by a son, Rick A. Bear married to Gayle, of Millersville; a daughter; Sharon L. Race, of Lancaster; a sister; Miriam Moore, of Lancaster; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by two sons; Kenneth E. Bear and Kevin L. Bear.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Yogi's Funeral Service to be held at the Andrew T. Scheid Funeral Home, 320 Blue Rock Road, Route 999, Millersville, PA 17551 on Thursday morning, December 29, 2016 at 11AM. There will be a viewing held at the Andrew T. Scheid Funeral Home- Millersville on Thursday morning between 10-11AM. Interment will be held in the Riverview Burial Park, South Duke Street, Lancaster, PA with Military Honors accorded by the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard, and the Vet 21 Salute Honor Guard. Kindly omit flowers. Memorial Remembrances can be made in Yogi's memory to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, www.lls.org.
