- (Burial location unknown -- Muddy Creek was where he and his family were repeatedly documented.)
WIFE: Maria Elizabeth Weidner/Weidener c.1752-c.1827
Frederick’s birthdate of Mar. 6, 1750 found on many pedigrees arises from a misunderstanding of the documentation. In fact, the documentation places his birth in the range beginning Mar. 6, 1751 (as he was under 14 as of his guardianship hearing on Mar. 5, 1765) and ending July 8, 1752 (as he was already 15 as of his first communion on June 8, 1767). The death year of 1788 and death place of Sinking Spring, Berks Co. found on pedigrees also have no documentary basis.
The final documents for Frederick are the 1783 tax roll and the 1786 state census both in Cocalico Tp., Lancaster Co. One might suspect Frederick relocated his family to Cumru Tp. of Berks Co. prior to his death, since that’s where his children turn up. However, there are no references to him past 1786, and furthermore it’s hard to imagine who “Widow Steffe” of Cocalico Tp. on the 1790 Federal Census could be other than Frederick’s widow (that is, if Lorentz was still alive as of 1790; see discussion on memorial #181707580). Jacob Remp, the father-in-law of Frederick’s son Abraham, could’ve been a factor in the relocation of Frederick’s children.
CHILDREN: On the 1783 tax roll there were seven people in Frederick’s household. In addition to those five children, one more is known to have been born after 1783.
(1) Peter b.c. 1772 [source?], m. Dec. 3, 1793 Rosina Roth (1776-1859). There are no obvious candidates for him anywhere after the 1800 and 1810 Censuses in Cumru. Some unsourced pedigrees give a death date of 8/6/1844; at any rate he was dead by the 1850 Census, when his wife Rosina was living with their son Peter Jr. The 1800 and 1810 censuses match his known children very well. Findagrave memorials are available for Daniel 1803-1874 #184215513, Elizabeth 4/1807-7/20/1883 #93415741 m. Holl, Maria 11/1/1809-1/4/1880 #86195871 m. Peter Ludwig, Peter Jr. 8/12/12-10/3/88 #40453231, but not for Isaac (9/8/97-after 1860 Census) nor Sally (b.10/89/94 still alive as of 1810). No memorials found for Peter, Rosina, Isaac or Sally. A Benjamin lived and died in 1806, and a boy died as a toddler in 1803. Most of their references come from the records of Schwarzwald Church near Reading.
(2) Abraham [memorial #158928917] c.1773-after 1840 m. Elizabeth REMP (est 1775-after 1850) on 11/8/1796 at Schwarzwald church. Censuses in Berks Co. 1800-1840 (1810 not found). Thirteen living children are listed on an 1853 probate document; see the link to his memorial.
(3) John Frederick b.4/24/1775 bapt. 5/14 at Muddy Creek Reformed (Wright LCCR I p.106). In 1800 he is on the PA Septennial Census and the Cumru tax roll. It's unclear whether he died shortly after 1800 or relocated, but there are no obvious candidates on any Federal Census.
(4) Daniel b.9/2/1779 bapt. 10/10 at Muddy Creek Reformed (Wright LCCR I p.109), d.1824 per unsourced pedigrees). m. Elisabetha Reisch of Cumru at Schwarzwald (Wright LCCR Berks I 184) on 8/11/00. On the 1800-1830 censuses in Cumru Tp. a Daniel b.1775-1780 (all 4 appear to pertain to one person) has slots for 11 children. This is far more children than the son of Frederick is known to have had, and the Censuses have him still alive in 1830 when the unsourced pedigrees have the son of Frederick deceased in 1824. (The survival of the wife to 1830 is not necessarily a problem, as she could be a second wife -- in which case she may well be the mother of the children that debut on the 1830.) RESEARCH IN PROGRESS.
(5) Catharine 4/19/1782 bapt. 5/5 at Muddy Creek Reformed (Wright LCCR I p.110). If “Widow Steffe” on the 1790 were Frederick Sr.’s, then the female living with her is likely to have been this Catharine. She MAY be the namesake #61628258 who married John Johnson (1779-1870) #61628259 and lived in Stark Co., OH, as there is a strong DNA match from a descendant of Philip of Hirschthal to a descendant of the Johnsons via their daughter Elizabeth (1806-55) #61729999 who married Peter Zerbe (1802-1869) #39152921. However, their is a discrepancy in the birthdates between the Muddy Creek baptism and the Stark County namesake that would need to be explained.
(6) Joseph b. 5/14/1788 bap. 7/27 at Muddy Creek Reformed Church (Wright LCCR I p.114). The baptism is his only known reference.
