  Maj. Ross died during an expedition against the Cherokees during the Revolution. Gen. Joseph Graham of North Carolina wrote in his journal: "The brave Major Frank Ross died of his wounds the 31st of March [1779], and was buried with military honors the 1st of April, in sight of, and opposite to, Augusta, on the Carolina side. Another biography describes the events as follows. (Maj. Ross) served in Snow Campaigns 1775 & 1776. In summer of 1776 commanded battalion from York County, SC in the Koewee expeditions and in spring of 1779 in command of battalion of Calvary joined Col Hammond near Augusta, Ga. on March 29, 1779. Two miles east of Rocky Comfort, they attacked a body of Cherokees. Nine Indians were killed. Some whites dressed as Indians. Three Cherokees and three whites were captured. Here Maj. Ross received a mortal wound in abdomen and died therefrom March 31,1779 and was buried near Hamburg, Aiken Co, SC, April 11, 1779. Also see, "Reminiscences of York" Dr. Maurice Moore.
