- Clayton Franklin Crayne, 84, of Longview, died Jan 28. 1998, at St. John Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 19, 1913, in Moorcroft, Wyo., to Franklin and Ida Mae (Young) Crayne. He and his childhood sweetheart, Freda Marguerite Dickinson, were married Aug. 21, 1934, in Belle Fourche, S.D. and moved to Longview in 1936. Mr. Crayne worked for Weyerhaeuser Co. from 1936 to 1941, then worked at the Vancouver shipyards from 1941 to 1944. After that, the Craynes moved to Falls City, Ore., where they owned and operated a grocery store for three years.
After returning to Longview in 1948, Mr. Crayne resumed working for Weyerhaeuser. In 1953 he started Crayne's Poultry Farm, which he worked with his family until retirement in 1972. He and his wife spent 11 winters in Arizona and traveled throughout the United States after their retirement.
He received great pleasure and satisfaction from his family, woodworking, gardening and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Marguerite, at home; two daughters, Georgia Joan Coburn of Kelso and Maxine Theo Sides of Longview; two sons, James Clayton Crayne of Longview and Gary Dean Crayne of Castle Rock; a brother, Cecil Crayne of Longview; a sister, Pearl Rigney of Tacoma; 13 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters, two brothers and a great-grandchild.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park. Entombment will be at Longview Memorial Park.
Viewing hours are from 2 to 5 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m Saturday at Steele.
