• Notes

  Sergeant, CO A, 5th Iowa Infantry...Civil War. Enlisted as a 26 yr. old resident of Cedar Co., Ia. at Tipton on June 24, 1861 as a private in Co. A, 5th Iowa Infantry.Promoted from the ranks to 4th Sergt. June 14, 1862. Was in the Battle of Iuka, Ms. Sept. 19, 1862 and the Battle of Champion Hill, Ms. May 16, 1863. While before the Great Redoubt on the Vicksburg fortifications on May 22, 1863 Smith was struck on the nose with a buckshot and had his gun smashed. On detached service with the Ambulance Corps. from May 30, 1863 until his discharge on July 30, 1864 at Chattanooga, Tn. at the expiration of his term of service. Kept meticulous diaries during his three years service now in the special collections of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library at Springfield, Illinois.
