- SPRINGFIELD - Dean "Major" Mitts, 85, of Springfield passed away on Sunday, July 5, 2009, at Villa East Healthcare in Sherman.
He is survived by his wife, Ann; a son, Stephen (Sharon) Mitts of Sherman; two daughters, Judi (Rod) Coady and Jan Kemmerling, both of Springfield; eight grandchildren, Angie (Greg) Ausmus, Trisha (Phil) Miller, Nicole (Mike) McCormick, Troy Kemmerling, Kim (Gabe) Alderman, Kari (Josh) Hudgins, Tracy (Matt) Hankins, and Robert Coady; 10 great-grandchildren; six nieces; and four nephews.
Mr. Mitts was born on June 28, 1924, in Springfield the son of Jacob and Anna Ford Mitts. Dean married Ann Wood at St. Francis of Assisi in Cantrall on July 4, 1944, by Rev. James Naughtin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harold.
Dean farmed in Cantrall, Illinois for many years and worked as a rural mail carrier in Athens for 20 years.
Mr. Mitts served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a combat rifleman, C Company 291st 75th Division. He saw action at the Battle of the Bulge, Colmar Pocket, and the Ruhr Valley Campaigns.
He belonged to AARP, VFW, and the Rural Letter Carriers.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday July 8, 2009, at Mott and Henning Funeral Home in Athens. Services will be on Thursday July 9 at 10 a.m. at St. John Vianney Church in Sherman, with the Rev. Kemme officiating.
Burial will be at Fancy Creek Cemetery
