- Eugene A. Groff, 88, formerly of Strasburg, died on January 5, 2017 at Brethren Village. He was the husband of Ellen Hess Groff for over 58 years.
Gene graduated from West Lampeter High School and then served four years in the US Air Force during WWII.
Gene was a volunteer with the "Seagoing Cowboys," a Heifer Project, taking cattle to war-torn Poland.
Gene was self employed, the owner of Groff Hi-Low Cooling, a refrigeration business.
He was a member of Lampeter Church of the Brethren and Gideon's International. Gene loved music and sang in choirs at Lampeter Church and Brethren Village. In addition, Gene and Ellen enjoyed traveling.
Born in Strasburg Township, he was the son of the late Earl L. and Helen Garber Groff. He is survived by four brothers, Enos L. (Barbara) Groff of Warwick, RI, Donald E. (Nikki) Groff of Lansdale, Kenneth G. (Shirley) Groff of Strasburg and Gerald G. Groff and companion Mara of Lancaster; a sister, Nancy Shenk of Lancaster. He was preceded in death by a brother, J. Wade Groff.
There will be a viewing on Monday, January 9, 2017 from 6 - 7 PM in the chapel at Brethren Village, 3001 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA and again on Tuesday, January 10 from 10 - 11 AM in the Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lampeter, PA. The funeral is 11 AM in the church with Pastor John Hostetter officiating. Interment will follow in Strasburg Mennonite Cemetery.
