- Eldest child of Samuel & Alice Curtis Bishop, he was born in what was then Edgmont in Chester County, today is within Delaware County. Joseph and sister Rachel were baptized 10 Sep 1704 at St. Paul's Episcopal.
Joseph Bishop married, but the name of of his wife has not been discovered. He settled in Edgmont township, where he purchased one hundred and ten acres of land from Joseph Carter and wife Sarah, 11 Feb 1722/3. After his father's death he purchased, 24 Dec 1742, from John Davison, sixty-three acres in West Caln; another tract of two hundred acres, from John and Elizabeth Taylor, 5 Apr 1743, and on 20 Feb 1767, obtained a patent for seventy-nine acres and allowance which he took up in the same township.
By his will, dated 9 Apr 1777, proved 16 Apr 1781, he directed that his lands in Edgmont and West Caln should be sold and appointed his sons, Thomas and George, to be his executors. They conveyed all the real estate May 7, 1781, to Thomas Pritchet, of Edgmont, for £ 1 ,000 ; and the latter, on the day following, conveyed the Edgmont property to George Bishop, and divided the West Caln lands between Thomas and another brother, Samuel Bishop each paying one-third of the £1,000. Joseph Bishop also had a son Joseph, who married Ann Kerlin, and died before his father ; a daughter Sarah Bishop, who married Thomas Babb, a daughter Margaret Bishop, who married Henry Fleming, 1760, and another daughter, Mary Bishop who married Joseph Cookson.

John Fleming son of Henry [Fleming], deceased, Sarah daughter of Joseph Cookson, and Joseph son of Thomas Babb, £4 each. All lands in W. Caln and Edmont to be sold. Executors: Sons Thomas and George."
