- Shirley Arens, 68, Alcester, died Saturday (Oct. 11, 2003) at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls.
Funeral service is 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at Big Springs Baptist Church, rural Alcester. Burial is in the Nora Cemetery, rural Alcester.
Wass Funeral Home, Alcester, is in charge of arrangements.
She was born Feb. 2, 1935, at Mitchell, to William and Ethel Mae (Hedge) Dickinson. She was raised and attended school in Mitchell. She married Albert Dant. The couple resided in Mitchell. After Albert's death, she married Joe Arens and they lived in Olivet. Joe died and she later moved to Alcester and made her home with her significant other, Eldon Nilson. She worked in many different capacities as a caretaker during her life. She worked in nursing homes and also provided in-home care for people.
She attended First Baptist Church, Hawarden, Iowa.
She loved animals, she enjoyed listening to country music. She will be remembered most for her loving and caring personality.
She is survived by Eldon Nilson, Alcester; one son, Richard (Deb) Dant, Freeman; two daughters: Alberta Dant, Yankton; Sarah (Jim) Richter, Gayville; two stepdaughters: Suzanne Arens Quist, Manistique, Mich.; and Patty (Dave) Arens Dringman, Mitchell; many grandchildren; one great-grandson; four brothers: Howard Dickinson, Napa, Calif.; Bill Dickinson, Burbank, Calif.; Ralph Dickinson of Florida; and Kenny Dickinson, British Columbia, Canada; three sisters: Mildred Leahy, Seattle; Betty Craig, LaCrosse, Wis.; and Nancy Dickinson; Eldon's children; and many other friends and relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
Memorials may be directed to the Avera McKennan Hospice Program.
