"Blind Man Dies Wk. After Wife.
John L. Peiffer, seveny-five, 313 E. Main St., Lititz, died Sunday in the General Hospital after an illness of one month.
His wife, Margaret Demmy Peiffer, died one week ago.
Blind for the past 25 years, he was the first person in Lancaster county to receive a seeing eye dog.
Before he became blind in 1933 he was a cigar maker and later a maintenance man at the Farmers National Bank in Lititz.
For a number of years after he was stricken, he came to the Blind Association headquarters here daily and worked with others similarly handicapped. Later he was given special instruction in his home.
Ex-Poultry Judge.
In his younger years he was a well-known poultry judge at shows throughout Eastern Pennsylvania.
Born in Manheim, a son of the late Richard and Sophia Luttman Peiffer, he was a member of the Lititz Church of the Brethren.
Surviving are these sons and daughters: Esther, wife of Paul H. Neidermyer, Bareville R1; Edith, wife of Oren McGonigal, South River, N.J.; Mrs. Naomi Peiffer Smith, Lititz R4; and Beatrice, wife of John P. Mohler; Lt. Col. Robert D. Peiffer, U.S.A. (Ret.); Margaret, wife of Fred T. Haggerty; and Kathryn, wife of Lester P. Kemper, all of Lititz.
There are also 22 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren; a stepson, Barton Ressler, Stevens R1; and these half-brothers and sisters, Cyrus and Daniel Peiffer, both of Mount Joy; and Mrs. Harry Keller and Mrs. Rebecca Bell, both of Lancaster."
