| Notes |
- William was born into a a family of early Friends (Quaker) settlers of Sadsbury Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania and is named in a variety of Quaker records found on Ancestry. These records enabled me to place William with his parents and siblings as well as his wife and children, and to create a memorial based on his almost certain place of death and burial.
WILLIAM'S BIRTH FAMILY
William was the son of Andrew and Jane Moore, born in December 1779 in Sadsbury Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.
William's birth date, as well as those of his siblings, names of his parents and residence in Sadsbury Township are documented in a (Quaker) 1827 Sadsbury Monthly Meeting/Birth and Death record. None of the children have dates in the "Deceased" column; I have not researched any of them as I write this first draft mid-Sep 2022.
This list reads as follows, providing documentation of Andrew and Jane Moore's children born and residing at Saisbury Township, Chester County, PA in 1827:
-- Lydia Moore: b Feb 1770 (no Day noted)
-- William Moore: b 8 Dec 1779
-- Margaret Moore: b 17 July 1782
-- Jacob Moore: b 23 July 1784
-- Samuel Moore: b 11 April 1787
-- Jonathan Moore: b 20 Dec 1788
-- Hannah Moore: b 7 March 1791
-- Elizabeth Moore: b 27 March 1793
-- Andrew Moore: b 22 July 1795
It appears likely (to me) that at least one child and possibly even 2 or more children may have been born between William and his older sister, Lydia as there is more than a 9 year difference in their ages. But I found nothing that alluded to additional children born to Andrew and Jane in the 1770's. Of course, this was also the period of the American Revolution, so perhaps Andrew had been away from home serving in some capacity despite Quakers' pacifism.
RESEARCH BACKGROUND
I am not descended from William, but began researching the family as a means of separating one of William's sons, Wilson, from another Wilson Moore who was an ancestor of a friend I was researching. After doing so much research to separate the 2 Wilson Moore's, I had collected a a fairly large volume of records/information of both families and decided it would not require much more time to validate this "other" Moore family and search for their deaths and burials via Find a Grave among other sources.
I was successful in determining/finding William's parents, wife, and most of his children thru records in Ancestry, Find a Grave, FamilySearch, and importantly Geneanet which was a relatively new source of genealogical records for me. The key Geneanet record for William was one that provided ins birth date and place, death date and place and the names of his parents and wife (previously researched).
Also on this record was the name of a son I had already found. Given the consistency of the names of William's wife (Lydia Moore) and son (Gainer Pierce Moore), and the matching of William's birth date to that given in the 1827 Sadsbury Monthly Meeting Record of Births and Deaths, I was satisfied it was at least 90% accurate.
By 12 September 2022 I had located William's wife (and her parents) and most of his children in Find a Grave and sent Suggested Edits to link them to one another. It turned out that Lydia, his wife, had moved to Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan between 1860 and 1870 along with 2 of her older sons and possibly one or more of her daughters. I learned that there had been a large settlement of Quakers in Battle Creek, though by the time the Moore's moved there the Quaker population is to have been declining.
While most of William and Lydia's children had moved from their birthplace as they became adults, Lydia, was still living in Sadsbury Township in 1860, now a widow, in the home of her son, James Markham Moore, and his wife and children. So it appeared almost a certainty that William had died in Sadsbury Township and would be buried there.
IDENTIFYING WILLIAM'S BURIAL SITE
I searched extensively for any records of William's death and burial and found no record beyond that of Geneanet (which may have been created by a descendant of son Gainer Moore since he is named in that record, detailed above). However, I was not completely surprised at the lack of death and burial records both because of the early timeframe and also because I had earlier researched a 2X Great Grandmother who was a Quaker . I had researched her extensively, including making a trip to Warren County, Ohio where she lived for a period of time with her parents prior to her marriage to my 2X Great Grandfather. I learned there from an Elder of the local Friends Monthly Meeting that many burials had no markers as many Friends considered a grave marker "vanity" and shunned having one erected at their grave. Beyond that, there is typically also the issue of the cost of a marker being a strain on the family's finances.
Today, 13 Sep 2022, I also searched all Friends burial grounds (as they called cemeteries in the 1700s and 1800s and perhaps still do) in Chester County, Pennsylvania, looking for William and any of his siblings and parents. None were found in the 43 Friends burial grounds located in Chester County.
I also found that one son, Gainer P Moore, who had been living in New Jersey when he died in 1902, was buried in Sadsbury Friends Burial Ground. An infant son, Samuel, had also almost certainly died in Sadsbury Township, Lancaster County in 1824 per a Quaker record found on Ancestry where the family is recorded as living in that Township at the time of the child's death.
Based on the totality of records found for the family between 1840 and 1860, son Gainer Moore's burial in Sadsbury Friends Burial Ground in 1902, and the Geneanet record mentioned earlier, I decided it was reasonable that William Moore, husband of Lydia Moore (her maiden name as well as her married name) was buried in Sadsbury Friends Burial Ground at the time of his death.

WILLIAM'S WIFE AND OLDEST CHILDREN
The earliest record I located for William and Lydia was an 1827 Quaker record ("US Quaker Meeting Records, 1681 - 1935) / Pennsylvania, Lancaster, A Book of Records of Births & Deaths of Friends, 1827") on Ancestry. This record was in a columnar style with the following Headers: Child / When Born / Names of Parents /Their Residence / Notes // Names of Deceased / And When / Age / Where Buried / Late Residence / Notes.
Four children are named in this record as the children of William & Lydia Moore who resided in East Salisbury, Chester County. One of the children, Samuel, also has entries under the "Deceased" section. Following are the entries; Sadsbury, Lancaster County, PA is the birth place of all:
-- George Moore: b 1 Jan 1821
-- Samuel Moore: b 21 May 1823; d 3 June 1824 at age 1 yr 12 days; resided and buried at East Salisbury
-- James M Moore: b 23 June 1825
-- William D Moore: b 24 May 1827
These 4 children did indeed match other records found as the 4 oldest children of William and Lydia Moore.
WILLIAM IN THE CENSUS
Because William died in 1853, he is named along with family members in only one US Census, that of 1850. Home is Sadsburyville, Chester County, Pennsylvania:
-- William More: 70, b PA; Farmer
-- Lydia Moore: 50, b PA
-- Gainer Moore: 16, b PA
-- Casandra Moore: 14, b PA
-- Jane Moore: 11, b PA
-- Wilson Moore: 8, b PA
I did, however, find William Moore in the 1840 Census in Sadsbury, Chester County, PA as Head of his family. This Census recorded all other family members only by gender and age category. Thus, the 1840 Census, when William should be about 60 years of age was recorded as follows:
-- Males ages 5 - 9: 1 (This equates to births 1831 - 1835 and matches Gainer's 1834 birth)
-- Males ages 10 - 14: 1 (This equates to births 1826 - 1830 and matches William D's 1827 birth)
-- Males ages 15 - 19: 2 (This equates to births 1821 - 1825 and matches George W's 1821 birth and James M's 1825 birth)
-- Males ages 60 - 69: 1 (This equates to births 1771 - 1780 and matches William's 1779 birth)
-- Females under 5: 2 (This equates to births 1836 - 1840 and matches Cassandra's 1836 birth and Jane/Jennie's 1839 birth)
-- Females 40 - 49: 1 (This equates to births 1791 - 1800 and matches Lydia's 1800 birth)
WILLIAM & LYDIA'S CHILDREN
Based on the 1827 Quaker record and the 1850 Census, only the 5 year span of 1828 - 1833 is unaccounted for regarding children. Looking at an 1840 Census for William Moore in Sadsbury, Chester County, PA, I am 90% confident it is of this same William Moore as all birth dates (parents and children) fit within the age ranges that Census documented.
There were NO additional children found in the 1840 Census which means either Lydia had no children during that 5 year period OR 1 or 2 children were both born and died before the 1840 Census was taken.
There is a record in FamilySearch of a daughter, Mary C Moore, born 24 Aug 1829 who died 24 June 1832 who would indeed fit into this 2nd category. I did not find any Quaker or other record of the child, however, so I did not prepare a memorial for her. If someone knows more about this child and creates a memorial, I hope she will be linked to her parents.
The children I thus found as true children of William and Lydia are the following, along with an accounting of my findings regarding their later lives:
-- George Moore: 1 Jan 1821 - 7 Mar 1898, Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan; married Lovina Newbre and had 11 children with her per his Michigan Death Certificate
-- Samuel Moore: 21 May 1823 - 3 June 1824; buried at East Salisbury
-- James Markham Moore: 23 June 1825 - 24 Dec 1879, Sadsbury, Chester County, PA; married Lydia M Reed 27 Nov 1851 and had at least 6 children with her
-- William D Moore: 24 May 1827 - 6 Aug 1884, Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan; married Hannah Ganoung and had at least 8 children with her per his FAG memorial
-- Gainer Pierce Moore: 13 June 1834 - 2 May 1902, Ocean City, Cape May County, NJ; appears never to have married
-- Casandra Moore: 30 Mar 1836 - 6 Mar 1856, Sandusky County, Ohio; married George Dyer and had daughter Lydia Louis Snyder b 7 Aug 1855,Emmett Township, Calhoun County, Michigan; I could not find any records of Cassandra after the 1860 Census with her parents
-- Jane Boyd Moore: 5 Apr 1839 - 1 Jan 1917, Saginaw, Saginaw County, Michigan; married Martin Markham in 1857and had at least 5 children; I did not discover the source of her middle name, but there was a Boyd family living nearby in the 1850 Census
-- Wilson Moore: 12 Aug 1841 - 3 Oct 1917, Oceanside, San Diego County, California; buried in Battle Creek, Michigan; married Caroline Eliza Cole in 1881 and had at least one child with her
I am honored to create this memorial for William Moore of Sadsbury, Chester County, Pennsylvania, husband and father of 8 children per records available online.
