- Henry "Hank" F. Zerbe, 89, passed away Saturday, August 24th surrounded by his loving family at Country Meadows, Wyomissing, where he resided for 2½ years.
A life-long resident of Bernville, he was the son of the late Francis H. and Mary K. (Bender) Zerbe. He graduated from Penn Bernville High School in 1942.
He was married to the late Anne (Facynic) Zerbe for sixty-two years.
He was employed from 1960 until his retirement in 1983 as postmaster at the Bernville Post Office. He served as a rural carrier at the Bernville Post Office for 1½ years before being appointed postmaster. Prior to his postal service, he had been employed by the Veterans Administration.
An Army Air Force WWII veteran, Hank served in England, Northern Ireland, and Germany. He was an active member and former council president of the Orthodox Church of St. Herman of Alaska, Shillington. He was former secretary of Haag's Cemetery Board in Bernville; past president of Pagoda Toastmaster's, Reading; past president of Bernville Lions Club; past master and secretary of Bernville Grange, where he was a life member, and past president of Western Berks Swimmers Assoc., Bernville, and a member of the original board in 1958. Also, past president of Berks County Postmasters Assoc. and a past state president of National League of Retired Postmasters.
As a member of Toastmasters International, he won the Area Humorous Speech competition with a talk entitled "The Outhouse-An Endangered Species." After his retirement, he spoke to over five hundred groups on the subject of outhouses.
Henry loved his family, friends, and community. He always had a joke and made everyone laugh. He enjoyed traveling, playing golf, watching the Phillies, doing crossword puzzles, and singing in the church choir and Barbershop Quartets.
Survivors include a daughter and a son, two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his siblings Francis and Alvin Zerbe.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday August 29th at 10 a.m. at the Orthodox Church of St. Herman of Alaska, 133 West Broad St., Shillington, PA 19607 with Father John Onofrey officiating. A viewing will be held Wednesday evening from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. in the Kirkhoff Funeral Home, 206 N. Main St., Bernville, PA 19506 with a Parastas at 7:30 p.m.
The family would like to thank the staff at Country Meadows, Wyomissing for their compassionate loving care and kindness.
Interment will follow in Haag's Cemetery, Bernville.
