- Schaefer, John Franklin, Jr. COMMANDER, U.S. Navy Chaplain Corps - age 76, died Monday, February 11th 2013. He was born to Miriam Moyer Schaeffer and John Franklin Schaeffer, Sr. August 31, 1926 in Reading, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Altoona, Pennsylvania High School in 1944 he was accepted into the V-12 Program for commissioned officers attending Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire and graduating after World War II with a master's degree in electrical engineering. Leaving behind his science degree he entered Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California graduating in the third founding class. Between the mission field and the Navy he chose the U.S. Navy Chaplain Corps. In his total of 27 years in the Navy he had 11 years foreign and/or sea duty among them two tours with the U. S. Marines and two overseas tours, three years in Naples, Italy and two years Senior Chaplain at Subic U.S. Naval Base in the Phillipine Islands during the Viet Nam War. After retiring from the Navy he served 23 years full time pastorates in the United Church of Christ at Good Shepherd in Reading, Pennsylvania, First Church in Belvidere, Tennessee and St. John's in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. After full time pastorates he was an interim for 6.5 years at Millbach, Fredericksburg, Sacramento, and Campbelltown in Pennsylvania.
Moving to Knoxville in 2001 with his wife of 52 years Audrey Weimorts Schaeffer, to be with their daughter Ginny Lee Hill, son- in- law Bradley Allen Hill and grandchildren, Brianna, Kaitlyn, Reagan, and Maxwell, he has substituted in Presbyterian Church USA at Mascot, Mars Hill, Athens Tennessee, Fourth Presbyterian, Rockwood, New Prospect, New Hope, Spring Place and others. His greatest desire in life was to be found faithful in serving God his Father, the Father's son Jesus Christ, and the Helper, the Holy Spirit. He will be sadly missed by wife, Audrey; daughter, Ginny Lee Hill and son-in-law Bradley Allen Hill, grandchildren, Brianna, Kaitlyn, Reagan, and Maxwell Hill; in-laws, Joleen and Allen Hill; bother David Allan Schaeffer of Rochester, New York; sisters-in-law Joyce Myrick and husband Eugene Myrick; sisters-in-law Rita Weimorts, and Peggy Weimorts and thirteen nieces and nephews and their children. The family will receive friends from 5-7pm Friday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel. A celebration of John's Life will take place at 10:30 am on Saturday at Eastminster Presbyterian Church with Dr. Sean White officiating. Family and friends will gather at Tennessee Veterans Cemetery on John Sevier Highway on Wednesday, February 20th, for a 1:30pm graveside service with full military honors.
