- Merritt C. "Lefty" Weaver, 86, of Temple, passed away Wednesday, July 27 in the Reading Hospital. He was the husband of Mildred (Lamm) Weaver. Merritt and Mildred celebrated 64 years of marriage. Born in Temple, he was the son of the late Edwin and Margaret (Becker) Weaver.
He was employed for 27 years as a painter for the former Western Electric in Reading. He was formerly employed by the Reading Railroad as a car inspector and for Moores Body Works in Muhlenberg Twp. For many years he was a painter and wallpaper hanger throughout Berks County. He was a member of Good Shepherd United Church of Christ, Tuckerton.
He served in the U.S. Army as a cook and baker during WWII. He was an avid bowler at the former Laurel Lanes. He enjoyed attending Philadelphia Phillies and Reading Phillies games. He enjoyed going to the casinos in Atlantic City, playing cards, and playing his handheld poker machine. He was a member of the Temple Fire Co., Goodwill Fire Co., Hyde Park, and the Laureldale Athletic Assoc. He was a graduate of Muhlenberg High School, Class of 1943.
He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Additional survivors include children: Richard Merritt Weaver and wife, Joan, of Leesport, Beverly A. Reber of Riverview Park, and Patricia M. Weaver of Leesport; grandchildren: Richard A. and Michael J. Weaver, Amy S. (Reber) Bowman and husband, Nicholas, and Melissa L. (Reber) Katchur and husband, Shawn; great-grandchildren: Nathan Weaver, Austin Katchur, Dylan Weaver, Hailey Katchur, Lance Weaver and Brody Bowman; brother, Melvin H. Weaver and wife, Joan, of Lititz; and sister, Mildred H., wife of Floyd Ulrich, of Fleetwood. He was predeceased by four sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services will be Saturday, July 30 at 10 a.m. in the Milkins Giles Funeral Home Inc., 4914 Kutztown Rd., Temple, with Rev. Merrill Marisseau officiating. Interment will follow in Good Shepherd Cemetery, Tuckerton. Friends may call Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
