Salem Lutheran and Reformed Church began in 1780. Services were originally held in the school house with Peter Hetzel, teacher, reading sermons. In 1783, Rev. William Kurtz began serving the congregation of Salem as well as Jacobs. A new log church was constructed and dedicated 25 May 1797. On 26 September 1880, the cornerstone was laid for the new stone church.
