In 1869, the Archdiocese of Baltimore acquired 40 acres of the old Bonnie Brae (“beautiful hillside”) estate to start a new cemetery. In 1871, the New Cathedral cemetery officially opened, replacing the “Old” Cathedral cemetery once located at Fremont Avenue and Winchester Street.

The “Old” Cathedral cemetery contained remains from an even older cemetery named St. Peter’s Kirkyard (formerly located at Cathedral and Saratoga streets). Remains from the “Old” Cathedral cemetery were eventually moved to the new location, known as Bonnie Brae cemetery for many years. Information that was included at the time of re-interment did not include original death dates. Records for these older interments are available on microfilm at the Associated Archives at St. Mary's Seminary and University, the Maryland State Archives, and the Maryland Historical Society. Then in 1936, 100’s of graves from St. Patrick’s cemetery on Orleans Street were re-interred into a new section in New Cathedral, appropriately named St. Patrick.

Today, the active New Cathedral cemetery occupies over 125 acres in the rolling hills of west Baltimore, and contains the remains of over 110,000 people.
